THE LAKE SANABRIA

THE LAKE SANABRIA

The Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, was established in 1978. It is located in the far northwest of Zamora province on the border with Galicia and Portugal, and near the Montezinho Natural Park.
It covers a landscape that has been shaped by the action of glaciers of the Qua-ternary Era. From its high peaks (Peña Trevinca - 2124m) we can see several glaciers extensension lines of impressive size that as they fell, left uncovered deep valleys and an important set of lakes. Among them stands out the Lake Sanabria.
With a 368ha surface area, it is the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. After spending the night in the Camping "El Folgoso," early we started the route along the beach with the same name of the park, following towards San Martín de Castañeda. In this town lies the monastery of Santa Maria, where is installed the Center of Interpretation of Sanabria Lake.
We can also saunter in " The path of the monks", which connects the village of San Martín de Castañeda to the village of Ribadelago (Old), tragically destroyed by the bursting of the dam of Vega de Tera, on January 9, 1959.
